Industrial IoT and Logistics

How many times in the last month have you ordered something online for your home or business? Every time a product is purchased online or from a brick and mortar location, product transport is involved. Currently, a considerable number of products are shipped from across the country or even the world. With so many products shipping from distant locations, the business of logistics – the commercial activity of transporting goods to customers – is bigger than it has ever been, comprising about 6% of global economic activity. A $7 trillion industry, global logistics revenue has risen 3.4% in the last 5 years, and is growing. The volume of U.S. freight is predicted to grow 36.6% by the year 2028. The Cost of Transport For freight and equipment vehicle companies, maximum uptime is paramount. Typical cost for maintenance and repair in the trucking and agricultural machinery industry has been 25% - 30% of the vehicle cost. If a truck breaks down during transport, extra time is spent locating a nearby service center, diagnosing, and obtaining parts, and thus delaying the shipment. Telematics and Analytics Telematics is the long-distance transmission of computerized information that can transmit data on the status of systems in vehicles such as braking, transmission, and cooling. Using the IoT and relevant data analysis, this information can be turned into actions that allow proactive maintenance, quick and efficient repairs on the road, and reduced downtime for fleets. The use of telematics is not new to the auto industry. The consumer vehicle monitoring company Onstar packages it’s system in many new passenger cars and trucks, and it emails users a monthly report on the health of major systems in your car. If you are in an accident, the system receives data from the car’s sensors and notifies an Onstar advisor though the IoT. The advisor then calls you through the on-board communication system and assists you. Utilizing telematics with “smart” vehicle monitoring and analytics can greatly mitigate costs in the logistics industry. For example, if the system detects low transmission fluid, the data are sent to a remote processing center that can assess the maintenance records of that vehicle and determine if it is necessary to service it during the trip or if it can wait until the end. If a stop is needed, the system will find the closest service center, notify the driver, and send the records and diagnosis to the shop before the vehicle arrives. These types of proactive repairs can save unnecessary emergency stops, increase uptime, and reduce costs.

Integrated Systems For proactive vehicle monitoring and maintenance to work effectively, several elements must work together. Data from real-time monitoring of vehicle default codes must be combined with operating conditions and history. This not only helps predict failures in advance, but also prevents unnecessary servicing. Further, when connectivity is not available, logic and use case actions can occur right on the vehicle, with no need to transmit. Implementing systems such as these does not require building novel enterprises from the ground up. To record and capture data, existing interaction storage software such as Calibre can be integrated and customized for telematics data and analytics. Combining this with AI (discussed in a previous blog) can form the basis of highly efficient fleet management and unprecedented cost savings.
